The Politics of the Shopping

The great photographer and Philly’s own Zoe Strauss put this image from the Urban Archives up on Facebook.   This is Angela  Miraglia at the Super Saver market at 23rd Street and Passyunk Avenue. July 7th 1972.  Note the emphasis on prices and the insistence on the politics of shopping.

Interesting, this image looks as though it could have been captured yesterday at any supermarket, Costco, Walmart, Meijer’s, etc..the express lane and ‘how do you like our prices’ button with the smiley face, a dominant symbol used by the Walmart chain.. as Deutsch illustrates, the foundations for contemporary market consumption were in full swing.
